Queen Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926) is the female Head of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth realms.

Prince Albert, Duke of York, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, had an older daughter, Elizabeth. As the daughter of King George V’s younger son, Elizabeth had little chance of inheriting the throne until her uncle, Edward VIII (later Duke of Windsor), abdicated in her father’s favor on December 11, 1936, when her father became King George VI and she became heir presumptive.

Imagine if Her Majesty went on a criminal spree one day.

We don’t have to be concerned with why she did it. Maybe it was Phillip’s final, infuriating remark. Perhaps she became irritated after seeing her own face on stamps and coins. Perhaps it was just old age.

Most individuals are aware that the Queen cannot be punished in general. While this may enrage republicans, it is the standard for presidents of state to enjoy this significant legal benefit, at least while in office. Because they enjoy a number of customary immunities both at home and abroad, it would be difficult to establish a case against any current head of state under domestic criminal law. There are sound practical reasons for this, not the least of which is to maintain the office’s dignity. It would be extremely humiliating for the country if, for example, it was discovered in court that our president had illegally downloaded Burial’s back catalogue.

In the United Kingdom, the Queen is protected by sovereign immunity. While the Queen herself cannot be detained, other members of the Royal Family can be if they are not with her. The law also prohibits arrests in the presence of the monarch or within the confines of a royal palace.
